Best Chapter Awards 2010
Entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2010
To promote chapter activities and interest in the field of History, Phi Alpha Theta
presents annual Best Chapter Awards for exceptional activities and projects sponsored
by local chapters. The awards consist of $250 grants for the purchase of books for
the chapters’ college/university libraries.

Chapters are categorized into six divisions based on student enrollment:
- Division I under 3,000 students
- Division II 3,001 to 6,000 students
- Division III 6,001 to 10,000 students
- Division IV 10,001 to 15,000 students
- Division V 15,001 to 23,000 students
- Division VI over 23,000 students
Chapters that have received the Best Chapter Award five or more times compete for
the Nels A. Cleven Award of special distinction.
Chapters that wish to compete for a Best Chapter Award should submit the following:
- A scrapbook or DVD containing: newspaper clippings, reports, photographs, and any
items exhibiting the scope of chapter activities during the year in a binder or
photo album. All chapter endeavors should be listed such as hosting or attending
regional meetings, chapter field trips, fundraisers, etc. (NOTE: all entries
should not exceed 12 inches by 12 inches in size.)
- A note about photos: We often select photos from Best Chapter notebooks
to be printed in our News Letter. Please be sure the photos submitted are
not too dark for printing. If your scrapbook includes printed digital photos, please
include a disc containing the photos
- Letter from the chapter advisor with the following:
- College/university name
- Chapter Greek name
- The names of all advisors who assisted with the chapter for the academic year
- Total student enrollment for placement in the proper division
- Cleven Award applicants: the letter should indicate both total student enrollment
and the number of times the Best Chapter Award has been received.
