Southwestern Social Science Association Meetings

The Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society sponsors the Ben H. Procter Research Paper Award prizes each year to the best of the papers presented by Phi Alpha Theta student members at the Southwestern Social Science Association annual meeting. Competition is not limited to the Phi Alpha Theta sections. The prizes include monetary stipends.

Awards may be given in each of three categories – (1) United States History, (2) European History, and (3) Asian-Latin American-African History. Each paper will be evaluated on the basis of its clear thesis, good analysis, smooth error-free writing, good use of a wide range of sources, and effective use of scholarly notes and bibliography. Length of papers should be appropriate to the 20-25 minutes allotted time for presentation in the program sessions, e.g., 10-13 double-spaced pages plus notes.

Members of Phi Alpha Theta pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree and who will be presenting a paper at the 2008 Southwestern Social Science Association Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada March 12-16, 2008 are encouraged to participate in the competition.

To enter, send three (3) copies of your paper to the head reader for in the category relating to your paper topic (see mailing address below).  Entries must be postmarked by February 9, 2008.  In addition, all applicants must send a copy of the cover sheet to the Scholarship Coordinator, J. Howell Smith, at the address below.   A paper may be submitted to only one category.  Winners are expected to attend the Business Meeting at the Southwestern Historical Association Meeting to receive their award.

On the cover sheet of your paper include the following information:

  • Category
  • Title of Paper
  • School Name
  • Author Name
  • Current Address including phone number and e-mail
  • School at which student was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta and Induction Year
    (Students not yet inducted must attach letter from chapter sponsor
    indicating when student will be inducted into Phi Alpha Theta.
    )
