To encourage greater chapter activity and interest in the field
of History, Phi Alpha Theta presents annual Best Chapter Awards
for exceptional activities and projects sponsored by local chapters.
The awards consist of $250 grants for the purchase of books for
the chapters' college/university libraries.
Click here for Best Chapter Activities or email Phi Alpha Theta National Headquarters for a list of suggested activities.
Chapters are divided into six divisions according to student enrollment:
- Division I under 3,000 students
- Division II 3,001 to 6,000 students
- Division III 6,001 to 10,000 students
- Division IV 10,001 to 15,000 students
- Division V 15,001 to 23,000 students
- Division VI over 23,000 students
Chapters that have
received the Best Chapter Award five or more times will now compete
for the Nels A. Cleven Award.
All chapters wishing to compete for a Best Chapter Award must submit:
- A scrapbook or DVD containing: newspaper clippings, reports, photographs, and any
items exhibiting the scope of chapter activities during the
year in a binder or photo album. All chapter endeavors should be listed such as hosting, or attending regional meetings. Since we often use pictures
from Best Chapter notebooks in our Newsletter, please make sure
that photos submitted are not too dark for printing. (NOTE: Your
entry should not exceed 11 inches by 14 inches in size.) This applies to both award categories.
- Letter indicating total student
enrollment for placement in the proper division.
- Cleven Award
applicants: the letter should indicate both total student
enrollment and the number of times the Best Chapter Award has
been received.
